Getting Started with Therapy at I.H.F.T., PLLC

Beginning therapy is a courageous step and we're here to guide you through the process with clarity, structure, and care.

Starting therapy can feel unfamiliar, but the process is designed to be simple and supportive. From your first contact to your first session, our goal is to help you feel informed, prepared and comfortable.

Working together begins with a consultation or intake session where we learn about your needs, goals, and preferences for therapy.

What to Expect When Beginning Therapy

Starting therapy can feel like a big step. At Inner Healing Family Therapy, PLLC, we aim to make the process simple, supportive, and clear so you can focus on what matters most - your healing.

Step 1 - Schedule/Request an Appointment

Complete the New Client Inquiry Form or contact the office to request services. You may share preferences for therapist, service type (individual, couple, or family), and availability.

Once your request is received, the office will follow-up with next steps.

Step 2 - Complete Intake Paperwork

Before your first session, you will receive secure electronic intake forms through the client portal. These forms include:

  • Consent for treatment

  • Practice policies

  • Intake questionnaire

  • Payment information

  • Emergency contact information

  • Professional disclosure statement

All intake paperwork must be completed prior to the first session. Therapy services cannot begin until all required intake forms are filled out and submitted.

To reserve your appointment time, intake paperwork must be completed at least 24 hours before your scheduled session. If forms are not completed within this timeframe, the appointment may need to be rescheduled.

Step 3 - Initial Therapy Session

The first session is an opportunity to:

  • Discuss what brings you to therapy

  • Identify goals for therapy

  • Share relevant personal, relational, and family history

  • Ask questions about the therapy process

This session helps ensure the therapeutic relationship is a good fit and allows the therapist to begin understanding how to support you.

Step 4 - Ongoing Therapy

After the initial session, you and your therapist will determine a rhythm for therapy that supports your goals. Many clients begin with weekly sessions, though frequency may change over time.

Therapy is a collaborative process grounded in:

  • curiosity

  • reflection

  • relational understanding

  • emotional safety

  • meaningful change over time

There is no "one-size-fits-all" timeline for therapy. The process moves at a pace that honors your readiness, goals, and lived experience.

Questions Before Getting Started?

If you are unsure where to begin or which service is right for you, the office is happy to help you guide you through the process.

What to Expect in Your First Session

The first session focuses on understanding your story, your current challenges, and what you hope to gain from therapy. You are welcome to share at your own pace.

Therapy is collaborative, and you are encouraged to ask questions about the process, goals, and therapeutic approach.

There is no expectation to "have everything figured out" before starting therapy.

Policies Reminder

Beginning therapy works best when expectations are clear for both clients and therapists. The following policies help sessions run smoothly and protect the therapeutic space for everyone involved

APPOINTMENT CANCELLATIONS

If you need to canel or reschedule a session, please provide at least 24 hours' notice. Late cancellations or missed appointment may incur a $45 late cancellation/administrative fee.

This policy allows appointment times to be offered to other clients who may be waiting for care.

TELEHEALTH SESSIONS

Telehealth sessions follow the same clinical standards and confidentiality expectations as in-person therapy and are conducted through a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. Clients are responsible for joining sessions from a private, quiet location in the State of North Carolina, where confidentiality can be maintained.

Please plan to:

  • Log in 2 - 5 minutes before your scheduled session

  • Use a device with a stable internet connection

  • Ensure your device is charged

  • Use headphones when possible for privacy

If technical difficulties occur, the therapist may attempt to reconnect or continue the session by phone when appropriate.

Telehealth services are available to clients physically located in North Carolina at the time of the session. If you are out of the State of North Carolina, your session must be cancelled, and we cannot continue your sessions until you return to North Carolina.

PAYMENT POLICY

Payment is securely processed through Ivy Pay on the morning of your scheduled session unless other arrangements have been made in advance.

If a payment method on file is declined, clients will be contacted to update payment information. Payment must be successfully processed prior to the session in order to hold the appointment and not to incur a $45 late cancellation/administrative fee.

CONFIDENTIALITY

Your privacy is an essential part of therapy. All sessions are confidential, with the exception of legally required reporting situations such as:

  • Risk of harm to self or others

  • Suspected abuse or neglect of vulnerable populations

  • Court orders or legal requirements

Confidentiality policies will be reviewed in detail during the intake process, so you understand your rights and protections.

COMMUNICATION BETWEEN SESSIONS

Inner Healing Family Therapy, PLLC is not a crisis service. Email and phone communications are intended for scheduling and administrative purposes only.

If you are experiencing a mental health emergency, please call 988, 911, or go to the nearest emergency room.

COLLABORATIVE CARE

Therapy is most effective when clients attend sessions consistently and participate in the therapeutic process. Progress happens over time through reflection, practice, and relationship.

Our goal is to create a therapeutic space grounded in trust, respect, safety, and relational healing.

Group Therapy

Ready to Begin Your Journey?
